Be a volunteer!
Volunteer opportunities abound at the Smoky Hill Museum! We have on-going projects, as well as special events, that need volunteers to make them a success. The staff trains volunteers in all areas, and hours are flexible.

If you are interested in becoming a museum volunteer, call the Museum at 785-309-5776.

Some areas of opportunity include:

Museum Store
The
Museum Store Volunteer welcomes customers, and assists them in choosing merchandise. Daily responsibilities include: becoming familiar with merchandise, and helping the Store Manager with selling, pricing, displaying, and maintaining merchandise. Hours are scheduled in 2 2-1/2 hour shifts on Tuesday-Friday from 12:00-5:00, Saturday from 10:00-5:00, and Sunday from 1:00-5:00.

Collections & Archives
The Collections and Archives
Volunteer assists the collections staff with a variety of duties, including: cataloging and researching artifacts, preserving the collection, installing exhibits, and data entry. Hours are flexible on Monday-Friday from 8:00-5:00.

Education
An
Education Volunteer-Docent provides assistance with tours, special events, demonstrations, and activities, both in the museum and at local schools. The type of assistance varies according to exhibit or program needs. In One Keeper's Place, a volunteer works with children and families to answer questions about local history. Hours are flexible, depending on the needs of visitors or scheduled groups.

Exhibits
The Exhibit Volunteer assists in preparation, installation, and teardown of gallery exhibits. Duties can include painting, carpentry, and "handy-man" jobs, as well as artistic and craft-related jobs. Hours are flexible, depending on the exhibit schedule.

BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING
AT THE SMOKY HILL MUSEUM

Community Support
Your volunteer activities at the Smoky Hill Museum help support our local non-profit community, enriching the lives of others.

Learn About Salina
The Smoky Hills region is rich in history, and you can be a part of it. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn about the region's history and heritage, adding to and sharing their own mix of life experiences and family history.

Special Recognition
The Smoky Hill Museum appreciates the time and effort that volunteers give to the museum activities, and volunteers are recognized with a variety of special events, including an appreciation luncheon during National Volunteer Appreciation Week in April.

1 Without the help of adult volunteers, who help with demonstrations such as churning butter, candle making and corn shelling, the Museum would not be able to put on events like Kansas Days and Santa Fe Day.

2 Student volunteers are also important to the Museum, not only for the assistance, but also for the historical traditions they carry away with them when their work is done.

3 Working with the younger children during Museum Mania is not everyone’s “cup of tea,” but volunteer opportunities at the Museum vary widely. There is something for everyone here.
