The literal meaning is the fifth of May, but when, where and why did it get started? Learn the answers to these and many other questions at the Smoky Hill Museum’s First Thursday program May 1. Dr. Michael Russell, Assistant Professor of History at Kansas Wesleyan University will delve into the origins and history of Cinco de Mayo. Dr. Haakayoo Zoggyie, Associate Professor of Spanish, also at KWU, will explore the holiday’s cultural significance and how it is celebrated. EVENT: Week of the Young Child Celebrate the Week of the Young Child with the Smoky Hill Museum on Monday, April 14, from 4:00-6:00pm. Parents are invited to create a Kansas symbol mobile with their children. The mobile is free for your child to take home and hang in their room. Once you are finished with your mobile, try your hand at a crossword puzzle and jumble. All the answers can be found in our exhibit gallery. The winning entry will be notified by phone. For more information call 309-5776. EVENT: First Thursdays: Fighting Beside My Brother Six hundred women fought in the Civil War disguised as men. Six hundred, that is, that have been documented. They fought on both sides, for many of the same reasons their brothers did. They faced the same experiences as the male soldiers, complicated by the demands of keeping their secret. Their success not only at soldiering but also at secrecy is borne out by various stories from doctors and undertakers. EXHIBIT TITLE: A Time to Remember: Happy 150th Salina What makes a city a home and not just a dot on the map? It’s the memories of people, places, and events. Onions, tears and an open grill creating an unmistakable burger … and smell; Mustang charging and Cougars roaring; spending a day at the park; taking in a show or just hanging out. The Smoky Hill Museum invites you to share these rich and exciting memories of Salina as a way to celebrate the city’s Sesquicentennial. Come take a nostalgic look back with the exhibit A Time to Remember: Happy 150th Salina, and see what survey respondents chose as their favorite memories of Salina. Enjoy these memories and take time to share a few of your own. Add your picture to the hall of faces, test your knowledge of Salina trivia, and reminisce about your favorite place. A Time to Remember: Happy 150th Salina opens April 1 in the Smoky Hill Museum’s center gallery. A special exhibit opening will be held in conjunction with Celebrate Salina’s kickoff event on April 19th to commemorate this momentous year. The whole community – and visitors too – are invited free of charge to begin the celebration of Salina’s 150th anniversary on April 19th from 11:00-1:00 in front of the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Ave. Hamburgers provided by Cozy Inn, now celebrating its 86th year, and hot dogs will be free while supplies last during the two-hour event with musical entertainment by Salina favorite, The Soul Preachers. Last summer the Smoky Hill Museum sent out surveys asking, “What makes Salina special?” Nearly 100 people responded with their favorite restaurants, parks, hangouts, sports teams, events and memories of Salina. These survey results helped shape the Museum’s sesquicentennial celebration themed exhibit, A Time to Remember: Happy 150th Salina, on display in the Center Gallery April 1, 2008-February 2, 2009. EVENT: Searching for Pawnee Sacred Places The early Pawnee believed that since animals were created before humans, they were closer to the creator and were therefore special avenues to sacred power. Numerous earth lodges were inhabited by these animals and offered great sacred power to the visitor. You’re invited to journey with Dr. Pat O’Brien, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and former archeology instructor at K-State, as she searches for and follows the clues in Pawnee myth and writings to locate these earth lodges inhabited by animals. Dr. O’Brien’s methods and research has earned the approval of the Pawnee Nation. The Friends of the Smoky Hill are holding a fundraiser – the 1st Annual Doghouse Give Away. Proceeds from this fundraiser support programming and events of the Smoky Hill Museum. Suggested donation is $1 for a chance to win this beautiful doghouse. The doghouse sits on display in the lobby of the Smoky Hill Museum and will also be at the For Women’s Only Show on April 15th.
